Contrary to popular belief a burger is not just a burger. In the right hands a simple hamburger can be transformed into a thing of mouth watering beauty. I remember summer family reunions back home when my uncles and brothers would start up the grill and char some burgers that would be better than any fast food chain’s best. It’s that hand made quality and deft personal touch that separate a simple quick and easy McDonalds hamburger from a savory and juicy burger form the heart. I’m happy to say that I’ve found a place in Itaewon that does just that. It’s called Est. 1894.They’re website says they want to rewrite the history of the hamburger going back a year before the hamburger was born in 1895. Given what I tasted they’re doing just that. Their secret may lay in their specialty cooking system using a “rotagrill”. This rotating grill uses a volcanic stones superheated to throughly and evenly cook the patties at 220 degrees. They incorporate fresh vegetables, Australian beef, and handmade buns and cheese into each burger.
I haven’t even touched on the menu yet. The choices include a plain patty, but why bother with that when you have options like the Rucola & Gorgonzola, Creamy Mushroom, Jalapeno & Jack Cheese, and Bacon & Cheddar. Believe me Jacoby’s, Two Broz, and Smokey Saloon have nothing on this place. They also serve hot dogs, Grilled Cheese, Salads, and Pasta none of which I have tried. But I did try the Mac n Cheese and it will curl your toes in delight. There’s also a contingency of fried yummies like onion rings, garlic potatoes, and wedges.
