Recently, I wrote about comics in Korea. Comic books have grown into a multi billion dollar industry spawning movies that bring in the big bucks. But as any comic book lover knows: it all starts at the source. Without the initial creativity from writers and artists those movies the world love would not exist. To celebrate comic books the convention was born. Starting way back in NYC metro area in some kids basement with a few of his friends and a surprise show of Stan Lee to now megawatt event held in multiple cities across the world conventions have indeed become TBFD (the big fucking deal).
Korea shares in the excitement of comic cons. Both in Seoul and Busan big cons take place attracting comic books lovers, anime fanatics, and cosplayers from near and far.
Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF)
Held every July. The Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival has been going on since 1995. It’s one of the biggest festivals in Korea. It focuses on animation not only specifically from Korea, but also throughout the world. Festival goers can participate in educational classes on the tools of animation, art classes, meet artists and animators, and of course watch great anime!
Comic World Korea
Held in both Seoul and Busan Comic World Conventions take place every few months. There you can walk side by side with C.C. (Code Geass), Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill), L and Kira (Death Note), Rin (Fate Stay Night), or Yoko Littner (Gurren Lagann). The possibilities are endless for who you might stumble across, ready to pop a picture with. You can also find all kinds of merchandise from T shirts and socks to various nick knacks and statues.
I need to go to one of these now! Are you going to go to one soon? You should do a meet up!
Every few months they have one!
