KMK: 4 D Movies in Seoul

Arts Film

4 D Movies in Seoul have taken the movie going experience into uncharted territory. How can one go back to the simpler times of sitting peacefully in a seat when the sensory overload of pleasures await at a Four D cinema? Easy answer. You can’t. You see Seoul’s 4 D experience rules the cinemas defying the ho hum mundane shows that everyone doesn’t realize they should do without.

Here, the cinema seats only a few and sell out quick. The huge seats feel like the lounge chair aboard some spacecraft. You’ll expect some safety bar to slide in place and lock you down, but don’t worry you won’t need any life vests or crash helmets to survive the movie. Though, you might wish you had them or perhaps an umbrella.

Once the 4-D experience beings expect to be knocked about in your chair when a fight dazzles the screen. Feel the pistons in your seat punching you through the material in the back of the leg and your back. Revel in the vertigo as you rock back and forth when an aircraft takes off. Feel the spray of water hit your face as the waves of some ocean voyage crash on screen. Feel the cool blast of air whip through your hair when a helicopter hovers. It’s immersive and ingenious.

However, a caveat exists: It’s not for every movie. Trust me. I saw The Force Awakens the first time in 4 D and I wish I hadn’t. The effects proved to be too distracting. I wanted to lean in and lose myself in the story, but that’s hard when there’s a laser blast frozen an inch from your face. The 3-D element taxes the eyes and being tossed about over and over while Rey Pilots the Falcon overwhelms and proves to be exhausting. Instead, save a 4 D experience for a second viewing. Or, if you can only see it once, try to find a 4 D showing without the 3 D effects. Then you get all the bluster and mayhem of senses without those tedious glasses.
