KICK ASS KOREA reason 13

Look, moving to a new place, let alone a new country, means facing a daunting set of hurdles. Saying good-bye to family, friends, and social networks tied intimately into your day to day life probably paralyzes most people. When leaving your home country those losses can seem even larger after realizing how steep the cultural and language barriers can be in a foreign landscape.

Thankfully, for queer folks, most big cities around the world offer a nightlife of relative safety and comfort. Though if you’re more wallflower than social butterfly then the bars, lounges and clubs may seem too intimidating and not so accessible, especially for those just arriving without even an acquaintance to call their own. That’s where the website Meetup.com comes in.

In Seoul the LGBTQ  group on the popular Meetup website provides an easy avenue to meet people and make friends outside the club atmosphere. It’s simple and easy. First, join up and complete a little blurb about yourself. Next, look over the upcoming meetups and join in. There’s a comment section for any questions or updated info about the event. Then checkout what the other members have going on and  jump on-board if it piques your interest.

A few of the past event’s included attending the wedding of gay Korean director Kim Jho Gwangsoo; meeting up for dinner; after work evening mixers; and conversation coffee circles. Upcoming meetups include a sightseeing day in Seoul, and a night out on the town.

So, if you’re looking to connect with new friends outside of a mosh pit then check out LGBTQ at Meetup. The group brings together a cross section of people diverse in gender, background, nationality, and culture. Make it happen and meetup!
