Over the past months and months I’ve heard nothing but great things about the pizza pies from Gino’s Pizza. I may be new to trying their pizza but folks from all corners of Seoul have had nothing but positive remarks, ranging from “best pizza in Korea” to “I’ll slap a man for another slice”! That’s high praise indeed. With all the hype I had to try it for myself.
When it comes to my favorite type of pizza I’m either a minimalist going for a simple pepperoni or I’m an extremist hogging every topping I can cram onto a pie. It really depends on my mood. Given those two extremes I of course went for Gino’s Pepperoni and NY supreme. One is a simple tomato sauce, cheese, and pepperoni delight and the other is a mouth satisfying array of Pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon, mushrooms, red onions, black olives, garlic, and green peppers. Too much? Never!
Both pizzas arrived with a crispy crust that I deem a must in pizza (unless it’s a deep dish). Thin crust and crispy each possessed the right amount of tomato sauce. Too much and a pie’s toppings can become lost amidst a mouthful of tomato while too little leaves you feeling like you’re eating dry slice of pita with a few toppings thrown on. And speaking of toppings the folks at Gino’s throws on the right amount all in equal proportion to each other. No one ingredient quite overwhelms the others on the NY supreme. At 20,000 and 26,000 KRW you may be wincing but it’s worth it especially when you realize the alternative is Pizza School.
The pizza options continue with the Woodstock (pepperoni, mushrooms), Farmer’s Market (Green peppers, red onions, mushrooms, black olives, garlic), Hawaiian (Pineapple slices, bacon and parsley), The Butcher (Pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon.), Brooklyn’s Best (Hand crushed plum tomato sauce, shredded and fresh mozzarella, Italian sausage, red onions, fresh basil, grated Parmesan and Romano, extra virgin olive oil), Spinach Alfredo (Shredded mozzarella, alfredo cream sauce, spinach, mushrooms, and red onions, grated Parmesan but no tomato sauce), Truffle Shroom (Shredded mozzarella, mushroom, Parmesan, Alfredo cream sauce, black truffle oil), Mama Mia (Hand crushed plum tomato sauce, mozzarella and ricotta cheese, crumbled meatball, fresh basil, Parmesan, extra virgin olive oil), BBQ Chicken (BBQ sauce, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, chicken cutlet, pineapple, red onions), Pesto Primo (Pesto sauce, fresh mozzarella, feta cheese, sliced tomatoes, black olives, garlic, red onions, mushrooms, spinach, Parmesan, fresh basil, extra virgin oil), and Taco Salad Pizza (Hand crushed plum tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, Mexican seasoned ground beef, diced tomatoes and hot Verde sauce). There’s something for everyone all ranging in price from 17,000 to 28,000 KRW.
There’s also a generous menu of side items if the pizza gets to be too much to handle (heaven forbid). You have the option of buffalo wings, cajun fries, mozzarella sticks, and even a house salad…. Yeah, maybe not! Truly, pizza is all you need at Gino’s.
The Good: A deliciously made pizza pie with a crisp crust and harmonious toppings.
The Bad: Price may be a bit steep for some.
The Weird: Taco Salad Pizza will never not be weird.
