KMK: Linus BBQ

Food Restaurants

BBQ in Korea is bountiful. You can’t usually walk a few blocks without coming across the sizzling smell of pork wafting down the street. Of course, it’s nothing like the BBQ back home in the states. Here in the land of the morning calm folks serve up BBQ primarily as samguypsal which is thick slices of fatty pork belly. It’s undeniably delicious, but I can’t help but to reminisce wistfully about the Southern style BBQ popular back home.

So its great that Linus ‘Bama Style BBQ has found its way to the back streets of Itaewon. Linus BBQ is the brainchild of Linus Kim whose past surprise Pop ups in Seoul have left a lucky few craving for more of his BBQ magic. He delivers. I was super hungry and I ordered a lot. I had the sliders  of pulled pork on four mini buns. The meat was smoky delicious and oh so tender.  It also came with a heaping serving of brisket which was the highlight for me. It was packed with flavor and oh so juicy. The meat practically melted in my mouth. I only used a dabbling of the sauce because it really didn’t need it. Not to say that the sauce isn’t good, because it truly is. In fact my meal came with two totally different sauces: one sweet and another that has a tangy kick. Both were pretty good, but I preferred the tangy one. I was also give the choice of three sides. I chose the pork n beans (full of chunks of pulled pork), mashed potatoes (perfectly cooked and slathered in gravy), and the coleslaw (not creamy and way too tart while authentic for the region just isn’t how I like my slaw). In addition I ordered the mac n cheese ( cheesy goodness and my favorite side) and the fried Okra (bland).

That’s not even the whole menu. Other delights await my next visit like deep fried ribs, mac n cheese jalapeno balls, stringy fries, and the bomb sandwich made of cheese, fried pickles, caramelized onions, and of course smoked brisket. I can’t wait. Probably because Linus really takes the time to get his BBQ right. He marinates, smokes and sauces just like the folks back in Alabama who live BBQ as a way of life not as just a bite to eat.

  1. I am working in Siheung-si, about a 1.5 hour subway ride from Itaewon. I look forward to dining there between now and August 2015. I am back/forth from Michigan every other month. Other than the chain American restaurants in Ansan and Siheung-si, there are not many choices for American food.
