KMK: Sindo Island

Korea Travel

For this year’s Chuseok Holiday I traveled outside of Seoul with friends to the nearby island of Sin. Do is the Korean word for island and so most folks simply call it Sindo, but Sin Island sounds much better, don’t you think?

Trust me, though, you won’t find much sin on the island unless you’re brining it with you. Which is actually good since the whole point of our vacation getaway was to get away from the big city life for a few days. It’s not even that far away. a quick subway ride, some time on the bus, and a fast ferry will have you on the island in under two hours if you’re coming from central Seoul.

It’s a shame that our journey began with a torrential tsunami like storm on Tuesday morning, but we soldiered on despite the terrible conditions. Once we arrived on the island, made our obligatory stop at family mart, and settled into our pension we stripped down to bathing suits and embraced the rain and wind with gusto and Korean liquor.

Once the weather cleared up we headed up to do a little exploring. We weren’t up for much and stayed close to the pension with only a cursory exploratory mission around the nearby coastline. We  slogged around and found a spot among the rocks to sit back talk, and have a few drinks before heading back to get dinner started.

The next day we found ourselves rising late and lounging about for the day. We took out bikes to scout around a bit further before hopping on the bus to head toward the beach. There we found a scrap of sandy beach with acres of mud and the water far out. A few of us braved the mud in order to reach the water but we very quickly discovered our folly as we sunk deep into the gooey mud starting with just our feet until it reached our calves and then thighs. We turned back after that.

If you’re in need of a quick break from Seoul then I can’t think of more restful place than Sindo. Check it out!

The Good:

It’s an isolated spot away from the loud careening jumble of Seoul. It’s a great place to relax and unwind.

The Bad:

There really isn’t much to do except relax. There’s a few restaurants, convenience stores, and noraebang but that’s about it. I hope you like fishing!

The Weird:

The beach is a wide muddy area where you can literally step in to your waist, be careful!
