I’ve passed Flower City a number times while taking the bus. It’s not to far from my apartment and I’d always try to drill into my head to remember to get over there. Well, last weekend it finally happened. I was waist deep in the blues and needed something to jolt me out of it. Plants seemed like a good answer, well, a better answer than cheese cake.
So I skipped on over to Flower City. I didn’t really skip but I did in my mind. It was a beautiful bright sunny day and the place wasn’t packed at all. Flower City is a huge plant nursery where you can find ontold of numbers of flowers and plant specimens from the deep tropical jungle to the vast sprawling dry deserts.
I spent a few hours just wandering around taking pictures and literally stopping to smell the roses. Relaxing doesn’t begin to describe it and I highly recommend you go just take in all the greenery and rainbow color flowers. You can find some real bargains among the plants and flowers. Prices range from 2,000won all way up to the hundreds. The pitcher plant was a even 100,000won so I had to pass.
Instead a went with several plants and a big purple flower that I have no idea what the name is, but it was pretty and purple so I bought it. I think I mentioned previously that I’m terrible with plants and regrettably as of this posting my plants seem to be fading away on me. I haven’t overwatered them, but someone just told me that maybe the problem is that they’re getting too much sun. Imagine that! I do have them in the window so a quick rearrangement might do them so good. I hope.
Besides plants and flowers Flower City also has an abundance of trees as well as all the accessories you’d need to spruce up anything from an end table to football field sized garden extravaganza. We’re talking path stones, gravel, giant fountains, and who knows what else. I wouldn’t be surprised to find some koi somewhere for sale.
And speaking of wildlife there is also a pet store on the premises. Before I made my plant purchase I was half tempted to instead buy a few parakeets. If the state of my aforementioned plants is any indication of my nurturing skills I’m glad I passed on the birds. Maybe once I can keep a petunia alive I’ll move up on the evolutionary ladder. They sure were pretty birds, though.
So, to find Flower City you have to walk away from Gangnam Station headed toward Yangjae station on the orange line. Stay on the main road and just keep walking you’ll soon see it in about ten maybe 15 minutes. It’s not that far away from the Costco in Yangjae.
You may have to re-pot your plants. The soil they use here to start them is pretty awful. Mine never lasted more than a few weeks before I started swapping out the soil with better stuff.
