A couple of weekends ago my workmates and I met at 9:30 in the morning to begin our outing to the Ansung cultural village. The whole experience was to be an excercise in bonding with a little fun mixed in.
The journey took about an hour. We rode along in good spirits despite having to give up a Saturday. We arrived early and the other two schools joining us must have gotten a later start than even we did.
The cultural village is nestled in the countryside amidst the green rolling hills. The area houses jewlery making facilities as well as pottery, painting, arts & crafts and courts for outdoor games like baskketball.
Traditional and modern artwork abounds across the grounds literally springing up around the corner as you walk the trails between the buildings. The whole thing comes across as a small artsy liberal college.
After touring the grounds we had a brief snack of ramen before our other sister schools arrived with their teachers in tow. We discovered that this was not only going to be an arts and crafts extravaganza but also a battle royale between schools.
Before the intramural games began we sat down to get our jewelry making on. The process considted of painting itsy bitsy pieces of jewelry. They were shaped like flowers and butterflies so any pretense of manliness was immediately thrown out the window. The painting and baking of the pieces took around an hour and a half. During that time we joked around and ran around the empty pool playing handball.
The end result produced either a necklace, cell phone trinket, or an earring. All for free! Well, not free for the school but for us.
After the arts were over and done with the time came to get physical. We divided into teams based on schools. We competed in the balancing bouncing ball event, balloon foot stomper, oversized inflatable volleyball, and a tug of war. I’m happy to say that we won three of the events.
The day ended with a hearty meal of Korean food. All in all a good day out.
