A couple weekends ago I went with my friend Steve to the Seoul International Cartoon Animation Festival. The event was held in a huge convention center with three halls dedicated to showcasing the lastest animation masterpieces from around the world as well as the best animators coming out of Korea’s numerous animation colleges and universities. The blue skies overhead may have been beckoning everyone to come out and enjoy the day, but the eye candy inside the convention hall proved too enticing to obey that call.
The first convention hall showcases not just animation and cartoons on film and television, but also in magazines, comic books, and graphic novels.
Terada happened to be one of the highlights of the convention. His style is gripping, bold, and dramatic. I wanted to just stand there forever and find new details to admire in his many pieces on display. What do you think?
The Japanese artist Kagaya did not rival, but surpassed Terada for my personal best in show of the festival. Kagaya’s Zodiac series brought a sense of whimsy and wit to the festival. I couldn’t help but smile as a appreciated each representation of the Twelve Zodiac signs. Of course my personal favorite turned out to be the Aquarius piece.
Jiggy Fellas got a chuckle out of me. I’ll have to try and find it on the net. I’m definitely curious about what it’s all about.
Can I bring him to my class room? The kids were running in all kinds of directions to get away from him.
http://www.We6.co.kr is an organization of Korean artists banded together to independently produce their own work apart from the mainstream comic industry.
Another cool and interesting exhibit this one a graphic novel about a futursitic world.
Corto Maltese, a famous and popular comic, had a huge section of the convention hall.
A spot to create your own masterpieces.
The second hall had a more interactive element about it. There were demonstrations of artistic software programs and even a section to provide the voices for a anime clip.
The kiddie hall had projects for the children to work on as well as a play area for them to rough house.
The Ghostface booth rocked. I definitely need to find out more about them.
Ha!
