This past sunday the Olympic torch came through Seoul. The route started at the Olympic Park Stadium and ran all the way to City Hall. I found out later that the route was beset by protesters, but at City Hall there were none that I could find.
I found out at the last minute and raced to meet my friends and take in the festivities. The atmosphere was lively and carefree and there were a ton of Chinese and Chinese supporters out and about waving their flags and chanting.
There was a stage set up for the actual ceremony and arrival of the torch and a seating area. We just wandered around and took pictures, joining in on the fun.
The Olympics are all about unity and coming together despite the problems in the world. There is a time and place for protests and airing your feelings and making a stand, but the Olympics shouldn’t be ground zero for political statements. The Olympics is one of the few truly good things in the world that bring everyone together on an equal playing field.
There were smiles and waves and hugs all around for everyone.
We ducked out to grab a quick bite to eat at Bennigans a couple blocks away and, I regret to say, that by the time we got back we had missed the actual arrival of the torch!
Still, I did get these pics of the goings on and the day certainly was worth it.
Fun times!
