KMK: St. Patrick’s Korea Style

Culture Lifestyle

Over the weekend I went down to the river walk stream near city hall to partake in the St. Patrick day parade and festival. I didn’t know what to expect from a South Korean St. Patrick’s celebration, but I should have realized that the holiday would bring out the Irish in everyone no matter where they hailed from.

The festivities definitely were bigger than I imagined. The foreigner population in South Korea is not really that huge, so you can imagine the small numbers the Irish probably have. That didn’t matter one bit as everyone got into the celebratory spirit of watching the parade and tipping back a Guinnes.
The stage ran acts all afternoon long ranging who played rock anthems to Irish ditties. The crowd definitely got into the swing of things with people even trying their best River Dance moves.
A tent was also serving up traditional Irish fare, but the line was way too crazy long to even thing about queing up. I guess if I want some tasty Irish dishes I’ll have to go to Wolfhound in Itaewon.
The Parade was small but everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The energy level kept people buzzing about and cheering on the marchers.
Not sure how death’s head works out in Irish mythology, especially on a suped up bike, but maybe he was channeling Ghost Rider.
A contingency of models came out to demonstrate their super powers of walking on cobblestone in high heels.
Rebecca took home a sourvenir.
