I have been seeing top ten lists all over the place. I guess its that time of year or perhaps it’s just en vogue to populate a top ten list. So given that I have seen top ten lists about favorite Korean foods, cultural events, cities, bars, clubs, museums, and everything else imanginable. I decided to do my own hodge podge of things I like about Korea.
Granted, I’ve only been here a little over six months, but I think my list is pretty nifty. So here goes…
PhoenixStorm’s Top Ten
Things I Dig about Korea
1. Kimchi
It comes in hundreds of different combinations, but one thing stays common throughtout: the utter deliciousness of Kimchi! I can have it morning, noon, and night and never tire of the stuff. When I eventually return home I will definitely have to seek out some Korean store somewhere and raid their kimchi supply.
2. Colors of Autumn
Fall is upon us and the scenery has expoded into an array of golds, reds, oranges, and yellows. Just walking by the river it was a treat to see so many leaves changing colors. I bet the countryside is really spectacular and I’ll be checking it out soon.
3. The Horde of Fashionistas
It seems as if everyone and their mother in Seoul is ready for the cat walk. Just walking down the street you see mom’s in high heels and gucci bags dashing for a bottle of milk from the 7-11 or guys working out in their designer sweat togs. Even the people without the labels are put together in distinctive looks whether its preppy, hippy chic, or urban swaggre. In Seoul there’s a look everywhere you look.
4. Namsan
Namsan mountain sits in the central seoul like an oasis of green in a city of steel and glass. Namsan is a great spot to get away and just enjoy the view. You can also take in the National Theater or Seoul Tower. Namsan has something for everyone.
5. Korean Street Food
Whenver you feel that urge to nibble the street food of Korea is there for you. A bevy of dishes like kimbap, mandu, korean sausages, stir fried rice cakes, fish noodles, and a ton of other miscellaneous dishes your sure to love as much as I do.
6. Tea Purple
Tea Purple has become my favorite go to spot when I just want to sit, relax, drink and do some work on my notebook. It has all the blends of teas that you could ask for and more. Oh and did I mention the tasty sandwiches? Tea Purple is not to be missed.
7. Megabox Movie Theaters
Megabox offers comfortable seats with lots of leg room and best of all a prearranged seating assignment. No more searching for seats when you go to theater because everyone can choose where they want to sit. I love it. And the cheap popcorn and drinks don’t hurt either.
8. Gratuity Free
Yes, I should be ashamed, but no gratuity rocks. I couldn’t believe it when I first learned that there was no tipping in Korea. I still can’t believe sometimes. I’m sure there is a waiter waiting to break my knee caps for that.
9. Noraebang
The singing rooms give hours and hours of fun. Just grab your friends and sing your hearts out. Booze costs extra, but will loosen up those inhibitions so you can truly cut free and give it your all.
10. 24 Hour Convenience
Seoul never stops. Whenever you want something, day or night, you can pretty much find it. From all night food and drink to dance clubs. It makes life easier when you can just slip out and grab whatever you need from the local 7-11 or resturanant or bar down the road. Of course, not everything stays open, but enough do.
