Sitting in the shade of Namsan mountain is the National Korean Theater. It’s located in Namsan National Park. The building is celebrating its 57th anniversary this year. The theater is the home to four nationally recognized companies: The national Drama company, The national Changgeuk company, The national Dance company, and the national Orchestra.
It also provides a home to international shows seeking to thrill audiences in Seoul. Recently, Cats has been playing here alongside the resident companies.
During the summer in the plaza outside of the Theater there is a summer concert on Saturdays. My friend Morris and I arrived a bit too early though and instead were treated to a technician singing to test the sound system. He wasn’t that bad at all.
I only saw the inside of the lobby of the Theater but if the main auditorium is as nice as the lobby then it must be quite beautiful.
Outside, around the plaza, there were several statues and a fountain. I think there is one week left to the concert series so if you’re free on Saturday around 8pm then hop on over.
By subway take lines 2,4,5 and get off at Dongdaemun Stadium exit 8 then take bus 420 or take line 3 and get off at Dongguk University exit 2 and catch the number 2 Namsan Shuttle bus.
This truly is a beautiful theater. More people should be sure to check out a show here. I’ve been at least a dozen times in the last three years. So great!
I wish I’d gone as much as you. Thanks for reminding me about the place. I need to get back over there. Plus it’s in my neighborhood!
Thanks for the blog! Helped me a lot on my project!
