Essential Korean: Ordering Take Out

So, you’re feeling lazy and just don’t have the energy to leave your cozy little officetel in order to hunt down your dinner? Well, have no fear! You can simply pick up your cell phone and in the matter of moments order up some delicious Korean dishes straight to your door. Don’t fret about the empty dishes either; just put them outside your door and the good folks at the restaurant will collect them shortly.

So first up you’ve got to be able to say your address in Korean. Sometimes you may luck out and find someone on the other end of the phone who speaks a little English and so you can mish mash your way to understanding between pidgen English and piedgen Korean. Second, whip out a one of those thousands of flyers, cards, post notes that local restaurants must leave on your door. Third, knowing how to actually pronounce the dish you want along with how many is a must!

For example:
김치찌개 (gim-chi-jee-geh) – Kimchi soup
육게장 (yuk*yook*-geh-jang) – Spicy Meat and vegetable soup
떢복기 (dduk-bok-gee) – Spicy Rice cakes
동가스 (dong-gahs-eu) – Japanese-style pork cutlets

For example:
1 (Ha Na)
2 (Dul)
3 (Set)
4 (Net)
5 (Da Seot)
6 ( Yeo Seot)
7 (Il Gop)
8 (Yeo Deol)
9 (A Hop)
10(Yeol)

Now all you have to do is pick up the phone and order away. The conversation may go something like this:

Restaurant: Hello, what will you order?

(Ahn-young-hah-seh-yo. Mu-uhl hahshi-guess-sup-ni-ga?)

You: Hi, I would like to order ___________.

(Ahn-young-hah-seh-yo. _______han-nah ju-seh-yo.)

Restaurant: Anything else? (Dda-dun guh-nun pil-yo-up-shi-go-yo?)

You: No, thank you. (Neh. Gam-sah-hab-ni-dah.)

Now just wait for the food to arrive and enjoy!
