KMK: Cambodia – The Killing Fields

International Travel

The next morning, after breakfast, we jumped into our tuk tuks and headed for the Killing Fields. On the way out of town we passed the independent monument, which resembles a tower from Angkor Watt. People hung out underneath grabbing a bit of shade.

Along the road we stopped to take a few pics of the buildings that people live in. The houses sit on stilts to escape the water in case of flooding.

Before the Killing Fields we made a stop at a shooting range, which in hindsight probably wasn’t the best of ideas considering our ultimate destination and the fact that we were carrying all our cash and identification on us and the whole scene seemed a bit dodgy. The place had a shack with racks of guns on display.

There were rooms with long corridors that had paper targets at the end. They brought out a menu with the different gun selections ranging from AK 47s to rocket launchers.

Then next stop was the Killing Fields. This is area where the dictator Pol Pot had thousands of people slaughtered.

The area is covered with signs detailing the atrocities for all the world to know. Being there is more immediate and sobering than any history or guide book especially since the main building houses the skeletal remains of victims visible through the glass windows.

The area is fenced in and just on the other side of the fence were a group of children singing songs. Christmas songs! To hear jingle bells and Here comes Santa Claus in such a setting seemed a bit disconcerting, but maybe they were the only songs they knew in English. The day didn’t stop there. Stay tuned for the Royal Palace!
