KMK: What Koreans Will Think Of You Based On Your Blood Type

Culture Lifestyle

In spite of the lack of scientific evidence, almost 60% of Koreans firmly believe that your blood type will determine your personality. It isn’t uncommon to ask about each other’s blood type when you meet new people, and then make assumptions about personality traits based on the answer. Dating sites, and even job interviews, will require your blood type information in order to profile you. This is a Korean belief that was born in the 20th century, and is also extended in other Asian countries like China and Japan.

The biological facts about blood type

There are four blood types: A, B, AB and 0. Each person is born with a certain blood type, which is determined by two proteins that could be present or absent in their blood (called antigens A and B). People with antigen A will have type A blood; those with antigen B will have type B; those with both have AB; and those with none have 0. Blood type is hereditary and determined by genes. Genes will also play a part in people’s personality, but human psychology has been proven to be much more complex than just a matter of two proteins. Western psychology classifies personality types  based on scientific studies about people’s typical behavior. Personality is believed to be the result of genetic factors that influence the formation of the brain, environmental conditions in the first few years of life, and the interactions with others. So far, there is no scientific evidence of any link between blood type and personality type.

The four personality types

In Korea, revealing your blood type will heavily influence how others view you, and what they think you will do best. Each type has a set of associated personality traits, both positive and negative. People with type A blood are believed to be hard workers, silent and resilient, but also very stubborn and protective about their feelings. Type A is generally believed to be good for wives and financial workers. Type B is associated with flexibility, optimism and an adventurous personality, but also lack of responsibility and selfish behavior. Type B is often the least popular in dating sites, especially for men. People with type AB blood are considered rational, sensible and good with people, but also severe and cold. Type AB is very valued for job positions that require mediation or specialization. Finally, blood type 0 is associated with a pushing personality, thriving for success and accomplishment. Type 0 is considered good at sales and any field that requires putting up a fight, and men with this blood type are often considered the best husbands.

Does your blood type match your personality type?

In spite of the lack of evidence, the belief about blood types and personality traits is widely extended among the Korean population. Its powerful influence could determine your opportunities in life and how people will interpret what you say and what you do. Be aware of your blood type and associated personality traits to better understand what impression you may have on others.
