KMK: Inside a PC Bang

Arts Video Games

They’re on almost every street in every city. Most of them operate twenty-four hours a day, from dawn to dusk, welcoming everyone from elementary school kiddies to aging grandpas. PC Bangs are the go to recreation spot for millions of Koreans. And once you step into one It’s not hard to figure out why. PC Bangs provide the essentials for a great escape from reality providing some much needed R&R that doesn’t require you to hustle with bags to the airport, elbow your way to a KTX train, or even battle for a taxi. Nope, most likely all you need to do is cross the street or turn a corner and you’ll find an oasis of online lands waiting to explore.

Once you’ve found your PC Bang of choice it may seem daunting at first on how to proceed. Don’t fret, friend of mine, the next few steps are pretty straight forward. First thing first you need to get a computer. Usually there’s an attendant at a desk waiting to assign you a computer with a numbered card. Lately though there’s been an automated system with a touch screen that allows you to choose your own open computer. Either way, once you’ve gotten your spot just enter the PIN number from your assigned card into the computer and you’ll be ready to go. There will be a home page with the games and programs available.  Some games though might require you to create an account on the Korean servers. If you don’t want to play on the Korean servers then you don’t have to worry about this.  But if you do you’ll need to login with a Korean cell phone number.  Also, if you need there printing services they may need to set you up on a particular computer so be sure to mention your needs.

After you’re set up with your computer station you’ll need to get comfortable. The PC Bang have so many perks. If you’re feeling peckish just hop over to the attendant and check out the host of snacks for sale. Usually everything from chips to ramen can be bought. You’ll also have your choice of drinks. Need that caffeine surge to keep going? They’ve got you. Just want a sip of powerade for an extra boost? It’s there. Or maybe you just need to stay hydrated with good old fashioned water? Still or sparkling? There’s also, sometimes, specially Designated Smoking Areas(흡연실/흡연석) for you die hard smokers. Though more and more places are straight up banning smoking so you may have to go outside and find some discreet spot.

So what are you waiting for? Go hit up that PC Bang! Most are open 24 hours a day.
