KMK: Best of 2017 Britney Spears Seoul

Arts Music

With 2017 rapidly running out of steam, I thought it would be the perfect time to write about one of my best moments of the year: Britney Spears! To be honest Britney never even popped up on my mind before her big concert in Seoul. Sure, I’d been a fan way back in the day but in recent years the last big hit I played of hers was “Womanizer”. Nevertheless when my friend Josh offered up an extra ticket to see Brit in the flesh, well, all those early nineties videos flashed through my mind and I was definitely game for Britney Experience!

The Korea leg of Britney’s World Tour stopped at Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Seoul. Despite the taxi hassle getting to the stadium, being dropped off blocks from the venue, we soon began to see the stream of fans flowing toward our mutual destination. Countless super fans sported every incarnation of Britney that you can imagine: Baby One More Time Britney, Toxic Britney, Slave 4 U Britney, Circus Britney,  Crossroads Britney and even Shaved head meltdown Britney. Clearly, Britney Stans stan hard.

Inside the stadium the crowd may not have been close to capacity, but still thousands of eager concert goers waited patiently for their High School pop Icon to emerge. Ages predominantly ran between early twenties to late thirties so there weren’t any hordes of raging tweens that you would see at a BTS concert but excitement permeated the air anyway. When Brit finally sauntered onto the stage she declared with her outfit alone that she’d come to slay. Even well into her thirties she channeled the youth and vigor of a lithe Olympic level athlete.

She strutted. She stomped. She shimmied. And she shook her booty through 27 songs and 8 costume changes! Relentless. That best sums up her performance which had the audience on the floor up on its feet dancing and singing along with the diva from their youth. Yeah, there was a backing track, but she also did sing live through portions of the concert. No one really expected a lip sync free Britney experience especially when she’s dancing so much on stage.

Having never seen her perform before I’d say that Britney lived up to her reputation and put on a fantastic show worthy to be spotlighted as a highlight of 2017! See ya next time around Brit!
