Wings: The universally loved but oh so difficult to pull off dish. Deceptively easy and the list of restaurants who have tried and failed remains a long one. Just about a month ago I tried a wing night over on Gyeongridan at the Metro and while those wings looked so tasty and delicious on the plate the same cannot be said once I tasted them. So it’s with great enthusiasm to write about a the House of Wings, a place that delivers both eye and tongue pleasing tastiness.
I heard about the House of Wings over at A Fat Girl’s Food Guide. Her recommendation psyched me up to go out and try for myself. It certainly helped that House of Wings awaits just a seven minute walk from my apartment, up the hill near Haebonchon Ogeori. I showed up on a weekday just as the owner, John, was setting up. After a quick glance at the menu I knew exactly what I wanted: Seoul Wings, Buffalo Wings, Calamari, and Pomme Frittes.
I ordered everything to go. While I sat at the counter John started to cook and spoke about his cooking style and how he focuses on fresh, local, and whole ingredients which he gets straight from Korea whenever possible. He values making things fresh right in the restaurant as opposed to buying the typical bottled sauces. So, he whips up his own for the wings, frittes, and calamari.
And you can really tell the care and thought that goes into such a “mom and pop” operation. From the proclamations of healthy and sustainable food you can enjoy to the value of integrity and selfless service.
Once my order was complete John bagged it up and off I went. I practically ran home. I started with the calamari. I don’t eat it too often, but that might change now. Calamari has a very mild taste and if overcooked can be mouth tiring chewy, but not these. Battered and fried to perfection along with the House of Wings sauce and the lemon wedge that I squeezed all over them left a satisfying bite in my mouth. Yum. Next, I dove into the wings. The Seoul Wings are a blend of spicy and sweet goodness. They were my favorite. I also enjoyed the Buffalo wings with a sharp bite which goes well with the cool homemade ranch. Finally, the pomme frittes! Usually I’m not a fan of wedge potatoes, but these were done so well I have nothing bad to say at all. They weren’t super mushy like some wedge fries usually come. These had a crisp on the outside that I need with my fries.
Overall I had a great experience with the food from House of Wings. Sure, they’ve only been open a few months but they have their operation humming along. The hours so far may be a bit limited, but hopefully they will be expanding that soon with more and more business coming their way. My only gripe, and it’s minor is the diminutive size of the establishment although that belies the immense goodness waiting inside. Sure, difficulties may arise if you go with a huge party of folks but then I suggest just doing what I did and getting takeout.
The Good: Delicious fresh wings and calamari to die for.
The Bad: Cramped spot makes it difficult for large parties
The Weird: I was served a tangy tongue pleasing tea while I waited that’s not on the menu! What was it???
