KMK: David LaChapelle in Seoul

Arts Museums

Last  month I had the opportunity to see the David LaChapelle exhibition at the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul. If you know anything about his work you’ll agree that his photographs leave an indelible imprint on the mind. His work boasts vivid colors and either presents strange incongruous juxtapositions or evokes the innate essence of his subjects. In a word his work is unforgettable.

The exhibition housed over two hundred pieces of his work. Some notable examples included his celebrity works like the Louis Vuitton skinned Lil Kim, the paradoxical heaven to hell with the usual drugged out Courtney Love exalted as a religious icon, reverential Courtney Love,  the skewed fun house craziness of Marilyn Manson posing as a crossing guard to a mob of Gothic toddlers.

LaChapelle is a provocative voice that speaks to our cultural landscape and the values and morals espoused by our actions despite what we may believe about ourselves.
