Durga in Jongno

KMK: Durga

Food Restaurants

In Jogno with a panging hunger that couldn’t be satiated with just any old morsel, I consulted the wise words of Seoul Eats via my Iphone and discovered a winning recommendation for the Nepalese restaurant Durga.  It also helped that the place coincidentally happened to be a block away.

The restaurant shares space with a beer hall which probably makes the lunch time rush a wild affair. Once inside Ian and I were escorted to a table amidst orange colored walls and shelves lined with ethnic knick knacks. Though ambiance isn’t what I was after it possessed the usual trappings of an Indian/Neplaese restrautnat right down to the Bollywood movies playing in the background. I think it’s some kind of law that all of these places must show Bollywood epics.

The menu at Durga is extensive covering all of your favorite Indian dishes. My friend Ian and I opted for the two person Durga set. Our order came with a green salad, samosas, tandoori chicken, chicken butter masala, rice, and red wine. We also ordered nan.

I have to say that the salad was salad. Nothing dazzling there, just simple and clean. The rice also was not briyani rice! Plain white rice with Indian food is not a good thing. I didn’t know that I had to order it special or ask for it. The samosas were fabulously moist and flavorful and I wanted more than just one. The tandoori chicken was succulent, tender and oh so juicy. The standout, however, had to be the chicken butter masala. I used my nan to sop up practically every inch of it from the bowl. Plus the spicy seasonings never overwhelmed the dishes like in some other restaurants, but only served to enhance every bite. Not bad for 36,000 KRW for two people.

I have to say that Dan didn’t steer me wrong. I’ll gladly return to Durga and recommend it to any lover of Indian cuisine.

The Good:

The food! I can’t really say enough about how great everything tasted!

The Bad:

White plain rice? Really, Durga, really?

The Weird:

Indian food by Nepalese!

Check out the website for prices and locations of their four branches.
