KMK: Haejangguk

Haejangguk

One thing I’ve learned about Korea is that it’s definitely the land of hangovers. No matter if its expats partying in Hongdae or Korean businessmen on a binge in Jongno the soju pours freely in a never ending culture of shot after shot after shot. Eventually, though, the drinks run out, the music stops, and it’s time to go home and pay your dues for a wild night out.

To fend off those pesky hangovers Koreans have come up with a few remedies. Most notable is the dish Haejangguk which means, roughly translated, hangover soup. The dish comes in a number of different varieties. The dish I had combined a bunch of vegetables, a meaty broth, and ox blood! It can either be consumed the next night or right after your bender. At the time neither applied to me which is perhaps why I didn’t really care for the dish. It could be something only the drunk can truly appreciate.
