KMK: That’s funny…haha?

Opinion Satire

The 사무실

At lunch with Herbert and Gaston…

Rolanda : Trying to make conversation.  So, Herbert, in Japan is there a teriyaki burger like there’s a bulgogi burger here in Korea?

Herbert : Yes.

Somehow the subject turns from fast food to something in Korean that Rolanda has no idea what the two are talking about…

Herbert : Speaks in Korean to Gaston.

Herbert and Gaston burst into violent seizures of laughter and Rolanda is anticipating something really hilarious.

Gaston : Translating, but trying not to bust his gut laughing.  Herbert says that In Japan the buses are always late because everyone gets on in a single file line and the bus driver waits until everybody is seated before leaving.

Gaston and Herbert are still hysterically laughing.

Rolanda : Oh.  That’s interesting.  Hehe???

I guess humor really doesn’t translate sometimes.

  1. I’ve heard of ‘dry humor’ yet, don’t know if there’s a category for this one! Could it be the equivalent of ‘how many people does it take to screw in a light bulb’ type satire? If so, all I can say is Le Miror a Deux Faces!
