KMK: The 14th in Korea

Culture Lifestyle

Well, I’m filing this under you learn something new every day. Just yesterday I was chatting with my coworkers about how my significant other and I didn’t really do anything for White Day, which is on the 14th of March, when traditionally a girl gives chocolate goodies to her boy.

The discussion went on toward Valentine’s and my personal favorite Black Day wherein I learned that the 14th isn’t just celebrated for the three months of February, March, and April, nope, there’s a whole year long 14th extravaganza going on that I knew nothing about!

So, here comes the run down on the 14th Holidays in Korea:

January 14th: Diary Day

On this lovely day couples should exchange planners, diaries, or possibly a blackberry. This way they will plan and coordinate together in blissful harmony for the year. Sweet!

The Singles Alternative: Who needs a diary? Go get yourself a netbook and show those couples what their missing out on.

February 14th: Valentine’s Day

Known throughout the world this day is a little different in Korea as the girls are only supposed to give chocolate love to the guys and not vice versa. Why? I don’t know, but I suspect because of the next holiday coming up.

The Singles Alternative: Start by wrecking all the decorations you come across. That should take the edge off. Follow that up with a few liberally directed scowls and a dry martini.

March 14th: White Day

Here boys return the favor and give chocolate to their girl. I don’t know why we have to segregate the chocolate giving but that’s the way it goes down.

The Singles Alternative: Chocolate is fattening. Have an Americano and nice crisp rice cake.

April 14th: Black Day

The most awesome holiday that I will not be celebrating this year! On Black Day single people must congregate  together in their misery with bowed heads looming over bowls of black noodles otherwise known as Jjajangmyeon. I suggest going all out goth, dressing all in black and belting out your darkest forlorn dirge. You’ll be a hit!

The Couples Alternative: Hey losers you’re single friends finally have a day to celebrate don’t rain on their parade. Better to stay inside with your loved one unless you risk one of those rioting singles to take him from you.

May 14th: Rose Day

Flowers can never be too far behind when love abounds and on May 14th they get their own special day. A single solitary rose should be given to your sweety whether they be male or female.

The Singles Alternative: They never really specified it had to be a flower. Go out and find that rose wine and call it a day.

June 14th: Kiss Day

Love is in the air, especially when you should be kissing everyone you meet! Whether it’s a peck on the cheek or a full on mack daddy lip lock I’m sure you’ll be setting hearts aflutter and hopefully not stopping them.

The Singles Alternative: “If you can’t love yourself how you gonna love someone else?: Go find the nearest mirror and pucker up

July 14th: Silver Day

On this day you exchange silver sparkly and dangly things with your mate. I’m sure you can find an earring, bangle, ring (nose, finger, or toe) to adorn on the one you love. I bet even a new silver cutlery set would work.

The Singles Alternative: Start searching those clouds overhead I’m sure you’ll find your silver somewhere up there. Hopefully.

August 14th: Green Day

Go plant a tree or go out and explore nature, hiking, swimming, or a walkabout to find yourself. Just be sure to take along your special someone.

The Singles Alternative: While everyone else is running around saving green things why not just have a salad and enjoy the fruits of their labor?

September 14th: Photo Day

Koreans never need a reason to take a picture, but this day gives them and us one anyway! Go grab that camera and start snapping away. Be sure to get that perfect couple shot to put on cyworld or facebook!

The Singles Alternative: Hey now I know why Koreans have mastered the art of self photography!

October 14th: Wine Day

Does this need any explanation? Any country that gives wine it’s own day is fine by me. In fact why stop there? I’m thinking wine month or wine semester! Find your honey’s favorite vintage and celebrate.

The Singles Alternative: If you’re single grab that wine and chug away cause that just means more for you!

November 14th: Movie Day

I love movies so you can imagine that I’ll be spending the whole twenty four hours locked in a theater with my special someone. Buy those tickets early I’m sure they’re going to sell out fast!

The Singles Alternative: Hit up a DVD bang though the clerk may look at you funny. You could always download at home and you and I know what you download would probably only be safe watching at h0me!

December 14th: Hug Day

Grab your guy or gal and hug away. You have to keep away the chill on those cold days somehow, right? It’s nice to get a hug on a cold winter’s day.

The Singles Alternative: Well, there are always those free hug hippie people out by Myeongdeong.
