When searching for a glass of wine to relax and unwind I suggest Kabinett in Itaewon. The wine bar is located next to the Itaewon hotel. Inside you’ll find an open space done in browns and reds and softly lit and bustling with wine connoisseurs and neophytes mixing and mingling. The din of conversation hits you in the face, but lightly, like a friend’s playful slap.
The service staff is courteous and prompt and will usher you to a free table as quick as they can. I devoured the bread while waiting for my friend Amanda and flipped through the menu. They divide the wines by country and region listing Germany, France, Italy and Spain as the old world while New Zeland, South Africa, Austrailia, and California comprised the new.
Once Amanda arrived we decided on sharing the fondue special platter and the kangaroo. I’ve never had kangaroo and it was too tempting to resist. For some reason I had it in my head that kangaroo was a white meat. Don’t ask.
Fondue friday’s at Kabinett consists of a fondue platter with assorted veggies and bread. Delicious is the word that sums up the fondue, but by all means bring a friend or two. The kangaroo on the otherhand proved to be a bit disappointing. The meat itself was fine, but I think I had built up the expectations of kangaroo too much. I thought it would be some exotic tasting meat, but really it tasted like beef!
The rest of the menu comprises the usual restaurant fare with nothing as adventurous as the kangaroo. So the faint of heart need not worry of being left with nothing to eat. For the month of March Kabinett is also holding Wino Wednesdays wherein wine is set at happy hour prices all night.
So take your friends and co workers one night and enjoy a glass of wine at Kabinett.
UPDATE: Sadly Kabinett is no longer in business. There is a new wine bar at that location.
