Last Sunday I met up with a couple friends and we headed for Insadong to take in the Buddha Birthday Festivities.
Despite the gloomy overcast weather the streets were full of people partaking in the merriment and activities.
You could join a table and do things like make your own lantern or clay pot, constructing paper flowers, assembling baskets, painting, or even acupunture.
Countless groups and clubs were out with there tables and paraphenlia to promote and introduce themselves to the crowd.
There were also demonstrations of traditional weddings, dances, and folk tales.
The rain did start to drizzle but that didn’t dampen the crowd’s spirit.
When night fell I only stayed a bit longer since I had seen the parade last year. Still its a not to be missed sight if you’ve never seen it.

The missus and I hit the parade this year, too, and we were both a bit disappointed. This used to be one of my favorite events in Seoul, but it really seems to have gone downhill over the past two or three years, with fewer and smaller floats now than in the past. Of course, the number of belly dancers has increased markedly, so not all has been lost.
Hey! Love the blog! I am moving to Seoul this summer – it is really helpful to see pictures and read about somebody else's experience! I would love to hear from you – if you have any advice, etc. I used to live in Tempe – I am assuming that you may be from Phoenix from your screen name. Anyhow, just really wanted to say hi…
