Muhahaha! The tech is going to get you! At first I thought the title of the article meant that the insidious tech had found a way to infiltrate our bodies by wiring into our brains in some kind of mad futuristic Terminator apocalypse, but it turned out to be nothing so dramatic. Instead, this news report by CNN reporter Kristie Lustout reveals how South Koreans have been consumed by the virtual gaming world.
I don’t think this is news to people living in South Korea. I was amazed at not only how many PC Bangs there are but also by the sheer number of people crammed into them.
I think her report is a bit alarmist. Obsessing over anything can be bad for you, it’s not just video games or onling gaming. Some people just take their gaming a tad too far and may need an intervention. The same can be said of people who obsess over eating, or gambling or insert whatever recreational activity you want.
Moderation is definitely the key. For a long time MMORPG‘s had their hooks into me real deep, but nowadays I’m MMO free. Sometimes I think about going back, but if I do I know that limits definitely have to be in place. Balancing gaming with everything else going on in your life is the trick.
Of course, the flipside is that you could also hunt for a job in the Gaming Industry and then suddenly your bad gaming habit makes you a hardworking dedicated employee.
