Arts Music

The world of Broadway has witnessed numerous remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on the industry. Among these trailblazers is Helen Park, the first Asian female composer to grace the Great White Way. Adding to her already impressive resume, Park has recently been nominated for a Tony Award in the Best Score category for her exceptional work in the musical sensation, KPOP. Today, we will explore Park’s inspiring journey as a composer and how the places she has lived have influenced her musical career. Additionally, we will delve into her favorite K-pop groups, including H.O.T., Toy, BTS, and New Jeans.

Helen Park’s multicultural background has played a significant role in shaping her musical sensibilities. Born Busan, South Korea, moving to Canada while in middle school and attending University in New York State, Park grew up immersed in a rich tapestry of cultures. This fusion of Korean traditions and the vibrant diversity of her Western surroundings undoubtedly influenced her artistic vision.

Growing up, Park was exposed to a myriad of musical genres, including classical, jazz, and pop. These diverse influences laid the foundation for her eclectic and dynamic approach to composition. They also fostered her deep appreciation for K-pop, a genre that would later become an essential part of her life.

Her passion for music led her to pursue a formal education in composition and musical theater. She attended New York University where she received her MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School of the Arts. Park is also an alumna of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop., where she honed her skills and immersed herself in the world of musical theater. During her time at NYU, Park collaborated with a group of talented artists and musicians who shared her love for K-pop. This collaboration eventually led to the creation of KPOP, a groundbreaking musical that propelled Park into the spotlight.

KPOP, a musical written by Jason Kim with music and lyrics by Helen Park and Max Vernon, made its debut Off-Broadway in 2017 before transferring to Broadway the following year. The show explores the world of Korean pop music and delves into the lives of the performers behind the scenes. Park’s musical compositions for KPOP brilliantly capture the energy, rhythm, and essence of K-pop, earning her a Tony Award nomination in the Best Score category.

Throughout her career, Park has expressed her admiration for several K-pop groups. H.O.T., one of the pioneering acts in the industry, holds a special place in her heart. Their revolutionary impact on K-pop’s evolution undoubtedly influenced Park’s own artistic journey. Another group that resonates with Park is Toy, known for their soulful and melodic music. Their ability to evoke emotions through their compositions aligns with Park’s own aspirations as a composer. And also, New Jeans, a rising group known for their catchy tunes and vibrant performances, has caught Park’s attention. Their fresh approach to K-pop mirrors Park’s own desire to push boundaries and experiment with different musical styles.

Helen Park’s journey as the first Asian female composer on Broadway and her Tony Award nomination for Best Score with KPOP is a testament to her talent, creativity, and dedication to her craft. The places she has lived, from the wintry outskirts of Canada (it’s all outskirts to me), the diverse streets of New York City to the heart of the K-pop industry and culture in South Korea, have profoundly influenced her musical style and sensibilities. With her compositions, Park has managed to capture the essence of K-pop while seamlessly blending it with the world of musical theater.

So do yourself a favor it you’re in NYC and head to Broadway to check out Kpop!
