Crystal Kay

KMK: Crystal Kay Williams

Arts Music

Have you heard? I bet you haven’t! I just found out myself thanks to this very site about J-pop sensation and Blasian singer Crystal Kay Williams AKA Crystal Kay. No doubt you’re busting a vein trying to figure out why a J-pop singer would be in my K-pop scribblings but rest assured CKW fits right in!

You see her mother happens to be Korean while her father is an African American gent stationed in Japan. Crystal Kay grew up in Yokohoma with both parents playing a huge musical influence on her. Daddy’s a bassist and Momma’s a singer herself. No wonder the girl’s got such pipes and skill to use ’em.

Crystal Kay sings in both Japan and English with some deft R&B crooning that I’d place right up there with Brandy, Alicia Keys, or Monica. She’s no stranger to the dance floor either with urban pop dance numbers that will have you grooving and shaking. Crystal Kay clearly has got the style to match her talent with a killer look and fierce beauty.

She’s been putting out records since the tender age of 13 and now at 24 she’s got ten albums under her belt! She’s also worked with Korean artists like BOA. I’ve put some of her music videos at the bottom of the post so check them out and tell me what you think! I’ve read that she tried to break into the American pop scene but failed much like recent Korean pop acts. What’s going on with that? Crystal Kay seems like she’d be a shoo in for the battle of Pop Princess, right?

Why haven’t Asian pop sensations like Crystal Kay, Wonder Girls, and Rain truly cracked the American Pop Oriental ceiling?

  2. Nice music and intro of Crystal Kay! She has a beautiful singing voice! But what about Amerie

(Amerie Mi Marie Rogers)! She’s an American singer born in Massachusetts of a Korean (mom) and African-American (dad). Her parents moved to Korea and lived there 3 years after her birth. Her first major record deal was with Columbia Records, and now she’s with Island Def Jam! Her name is tattooed on the lower part of her back in Hangul as you will see in this video. She's very talented. The song on the following video is entitled Crush! Enjoy!

      1. Amerie had an album come out last year but didn’t do anything to promote it. I watched a show on youtube called “The Skorpion Show and the skorpion likes Amerie too and he was complaining and saying on the videos how she needed to promote the album and videos and was wondering why she didn’t do it. This guy’s show has celebs watching and listening and there are times that some celebs actually take his advice. I wanted to see what she was gonna do especially after the success of 1thing.

        1. 1 thing was such a hot track! I expected big beyonce like things and she didn’t even give us Kelly Rowland!

        1. According to en.wikipedia…"Amerie is currently in the studio working on her fifth studio album, Cymatika Vol. 1, to be released in 2011. The album title is based on the word Cymatics, which means the study of visible sound and vibration. On May 20, 2010 she revealed a new song via twitter titled "Who's Gonna Love You"[20]."

  3. I really love her voice. I think you're right Lola that the cultural/language differences may be a hurdle to high to cross, but when the artists go out of their way to put out English albums (BOA) then I just don't get it!

I'm thinking Crystal Kay maybe should've gone with singing hooks for people like JayZ or maybe doing some duets. She's got the talent

I can't think of the last Asian artist (musical) that is that made it big in the USA by crossing over. But as a whole I feel Americans have a deaf ear to anything except English language music, though its slowly changing with Spanish.

  4. I've listened to some of her music, and I dig her. I think though that maybe cultural differences play a part in being unable to make it in the States. What they do for a Korean/Japanese audience just doesn't seem to work for them in the USA. But, maybe people just need to listen a little longer and they'll change there mind. Or maybe instead of trying to make it big in the states, they should slowly get into it. Kind of like Taeyang.

  5. It’s really something how much music as a whole we miss in the states. Everyone see’s whats on MTV and other channels and believes that’s what we all listen to. I have kpop, jpop, euro music, world music as well as US pop, hip hop, R&B and rock. I don’t like for groups to change the languages of their songs that’s what I like the challenge of not knowing the words but getting the feel of the song by the melody and the artists voice. Most of the time I don’t check for the translations and let the song be. I got into asian pop through anime’s and I love those songs just the way they are. We should all keep dialoging about music because the more we talk the more both sides of the planet will know that no one controls what we listen to but us, no matter whats on the radio and on tv we control what we put on our pc’s, itunes, ipods and iphones. Music one love.

    1. I hear you! I can't even fathom how people listened to world music, discovered it, and found it without the internet or doing some serious world travelling!

I think the original music listened in all pockets around the world is great, but why not make an original album for a different market in their language? Maybe this is where collaborations can come into play.

      1. Korea has had some great collaborations with American artists we just haven’t heard the songs on the radio. Rain has a jam with Omarion that is off the hook! I have to see if I can find it on itunes or something but the song is off the chain. I can’t remember the title but that should have been on the radio for sure. Crystal Kay and BOA did a song together too and it’s cute.

  6. i don’t think eastern artists have to penetrate the west. there is a considerable difference in taste andstandard of beauty that rarely coincides with each other to exploit as a single “market,” so i don’t think it’s so bad to recognize them as separate. it’s true that western media is often referred and even purchased by easterners, but their influence is limited. take bruno mars and jaebom for example. i haven’t seen the numbers, but i’m willing to bet jaebom made more money on his version of [the] song in the east than bruno mars did for the original.
likewise, i don’t think the wonder girls should try so hard to penetrate western audiences with english versions fo their songs if western artists don’t modify their songs to fit eastern languages; the original products will sell themselves even if it’s in a limited way.

    1. I think leaving the original version to be bought by the "other" audience is totally valid. I can't tell you the number of times I've complained about Korean or Japanese movies being remade for the west. It's ridiculous. But wouldn't it be great for artists to actually make an original record for the "new" audience in that language..if they're able to do that.
