KMK: Uncle Sam’s Pancake

EDITOR’S NOTE: Uncle Sam’s Pancake has closed

I had known about Uncle Sam’s Pancake spot for awhile, but it wasn’t until my friend dragged me up the street one weekend morning that I finally had the chance to check it out. First thing first, breakfast is not hard. It’s one of the easiest meals to make especially given that I can do it! Which means it’s a priority that any brunch/breakfast experience should serve up a delicious, fast, reasonably priced breakfast along with appropriate beverages. My coffee is a must with my bacon.

One thing Uncle Sam excels at is reasonable prices. Their morning set includes two pancakes, two slices of bacon, one sausage, one egg and the choice of coffee or orange juice. You get all that for all of 9,000 KRW. That’s perfect! I have to say that the meal came pretty quickly as well. Plus, it all looked perfect on the plate. When I dug in almost everything was good. The bacon was suitably crisp. The sunny side up egg I ordered was runny how I like it. The sausage was juicy with a hint of herb and sweetness. The pancake, however, missed the mark for me. It was too chewy, almost gummy, which was disappointing. I did appreciate the large portions though.

My friend ordered the cheddar, onion, bacon waffle. She had urged me to do the same. I should have listened. Her waffle was stuffed with cheddar and onion goodness. The waffle itself was flaky and made just right. I almost switched our plates. The menu also includes french toast, omelettes, a variety of fruit topped pancakes, and of course waffles. They also have real maple syrup which is a boon. The biggest and most direct competition these folks have is Original Pancake house nearby in Itaewon. I will say that I prefer the food at Original, but man those prices they list do seem a bit ridiculous. So, if you’re looking for a decent brekkie at a good price then Uncle Sam may be just the spot. I would give the pancakes the side eye though and go for a waffle instead.

The Good: Great Prices!

The Bad: My pancake was a little too chewy.

The Weird: Stuffed waffles!
