With a bold new slogan combined with a matching determination the folks at KQCF are at the forefront of Gay Rights in Korea, leading the charge for equality. This year Seoul Pride took longer to organize and cement thanks to interference by outside groups seeking to curtail the movement of Gay Rights in South Korea. Nevertheless, progress moves forward no matter how grudgingly slow and the celebration has been finalized for this coming July 14th, 15th and the 20th through the 23rd! To Celebrate this year’s festivities why not show how things were done back in the day? Way back from 2016 to 2008!

Also celebrating Pride in July on Saturday the 8th the folks behind Meet Market in Hongdae will be throwing another bash!
Hello, this is Meet Market.
We are happy to announce that The Pride Meet Market is an official sponsor event for Korea Queer Festival 2017. Therefore, 30% of all profits from this Meet Market will be donated to the organizers. We hope that you come to enjoy the performances while also supporting Korea Queer Festival 2017 by doing so.
I’m a blogger, writer, and urban explorer. I worked in South Korea’s ESL field for the 15 years. My one year contract turned, unexpectedly, into a journey!
I think it was Taiwan that recently became the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage. Let’s hope Korea is not too far behind. I imagine the festival will had many attendees, and that each year, it’ll get larger and larger as attitudes here begin to change.
This festival is really packed with interesting activities! I’ve read a news about the LGBT parade here in Philippines as well. It’s nice when people support each others gender. I hope Koreans accept them as well.
I saw the set up for the Queer Fest this past weekend and saw all of the police barricades they were getting ready to set up. Quite the to-do. It’s sad it still is though.. I mean in that way, with anti-protests and all. It seemed to go off a bit better this time around but I wonder if it’s because it had a different name than Pride and thus the Christian groups that usually protest weren’t as aware that it was going to happen? Great info on the happenings though. Thanks.
This is a great informative piece! I’m kinda bummed I’ve missed the gay pride celebrations here in Korea. I mostly always attended in Chicago. I really dislike that the movement gets so much backlash in this country, but am happy to hear that it went out despite the pushback.
OMG, I love the idea of a Queer Film Festival! I think the cinematic form is one of the best artistic expressions there is out there and it’s truly amazing that the Koreans have enough stories to bring to life on the big screen. I had a number of LGBTQ friends while in Korea and I know Pride is the highlight of their year. Great roundup, will send it to some friends attending the event next weekend 😀
It’s amazing to see how much Pride has grown in Korea in recent years. I was reading online about all the backlash from extremist christian groups and it sucks that the GBLT community can’t be just given their one day to take to the streets and express themselves altogether. It’s not asking much. We have to listen to the extremist christians telling us that we’re all sinners and gonna go to hell when we walk down the street in Korea
I honestly didn’t know that Seoul Pride Parade happens here. And there’s a lot of gays out here, anyway. In the Philippines, we have a lot of gays and lesbians openly expressing themselves but we don’t have the Pride Parade. But they are very much accepted in my country.
Living in Toronto, the Pride Parade was an annual event that no one even batted an eyelash at, so when I moved to Korea and discovered how backward the ideas are. I wasn’t totally surprised, but um wow. So I was doubly surprised to find out that Seoul Pride even existed. Kudos to the organizers for bringing this (needed) event to a country that desperately needs modernizing in certain areas…especially under I bet not the easiest circumstances…

Fingers crossed! But I think Taiwan is a bit more progressive. It will happen eventually I hope.

The good thing is that slowly those protesters will eventually one by one go away. The route of the dinosaurs. 🙂

I hope still managed to see the film festival!

It’s really a great event. I love how they get features and shorts from all around the world! Should be a great time!

From my first pride here back in 2007 to this one! It has gone through such a transformation!

I wonder why there’s no parade or pride festival in the Philippines? Maybe its in the works?
