STUDIO GHIBLI ART EXHIBITION
Studio Ghibli Art Exhibition. If you are a lover of animation then you must undoubtedly have heard or animator extraordinaire Hayao Miyazaki. His work has influenced generations of young and old folks alike, immersing them in worlds of wonder and sheer joy. Usually, the only way to experience his work and the other fantastic animated films from Studio Ghibili is at the movies or if you’re lucky at the studio iself in Tokyo. However, these past few months a travelling live action exhibit has been on display in Seoul at I-park Mall.
There’s something even more magical to meeting Miyazaki’s zany creations up close and personal. To stare the witch Yababa eye to eye, catch No Face sitting solemnly on his train, or peek into cut outs to spy on little Totoros minding their business measured fun in whole new ways. They make the exhibit totally immersive complete with plenty of photo opportunities with some of your favorite characters. My first Studio Ghibili flick was Castle in the Sky from the eighties (which seems like a lifetime ago)! It’s an amazingly deft tale of a young girl and her friend racing against pirates and secret agents to find a legendary castle in the sky.
Every film, of course, couldn’t be fully realized in a 3-d setting, but enough favorite were there to make it a totally worthwhile experience. San, from Princess Mononoke, flanked by wolves and brandishing a knife in all her fierceness. Yababa, plucked from Spirited Away, keeping her books up to date amidst a fluttering of papers. The enigmatic Totoro towering next to little pixie-esque girl. The strange kooky walking house from Howl’s Moving Castle. The rascally raccoons from Pom Poko planning their next hi jinx. The titular star of Poroco Rosso looking as if he’d just stuffed a sandwich in his mouth. And those were just some of the sights to see!
If you didn’t catch it, no worries, because Tokyo is a not so far plane ride away and the actual Studio headquarters awaits!
