I thought I would start a new segment on the blog featuring activities I do in the classroom. Sometimes coming up with a fun activity to help the kids process the target language for the day’s lesson can be daunting. So here is one out of my hat.
Flippy Cup
Basically, you take the drinking game and subtract all the alcohol, but not the fun! Divide the class into two teams. My classes always gravitate toward boys vs girls. Then use the target language in a form of a question you can pose to the kids. Another method is to use flashcards or picture cards in which the kids have to use the target language that corresponds to the picture.
If they are correct they get a chance to flip the dixie cup. You can have the fastest team win or you can assign points for each time a cup lands right side up. The kids love it and they practice using the language which reinforces it.
Plus I’m reminded of good times. If you have any good activities please share!
Hey Jelly,
Each team lines up on opposing sides of a table. In the alcoholic version the cups are filled with your drink of choice. Each team downs it one at a time and must flip the cup and finish the fastest. It’s great!
I love hearing about new ideas in the classroom. Unfortunately, I don’t know how (the alcoholic version of) flippy cup works! I’ve never played!
