The name conjures up images of a giant mythic beast flying through the night sky. Well, it does for me anyways, but Beomeosa is not some mystic fairytale but a real life Buddhist temple nestled in the mountainous slopes of Geumjeongsan in Busan. It’s old, really old, like built in 678 old. Constructed during the reign of Silla, King Munmu, it’s one of the best known and beloved temples in all of South Korea.
To reach the temple one can take a bus or one can walk. Guess which route Jose and I chose? You guessed it! We trudged up a winding road that spiraled up to the temple. Just when I’d think we had arrived there would be more road to travel around the bend. It was worth it though. The trip up is beautiful and peaceful and there are more than several guys on the side selling water or bananas or just about anything to keep your energy high as you make your way up.
Once you reach the temple you are treated to a trickling stream and mini waterfall and of course more trail as now you must contend with the steep steps up into the temple itself. The day we went happened to be a celebration for Buddha’s birthday! Tons of people were out and about taking part in the festivities as well as the ritual ceremony being filmed for a TV spot. Lots of suits waiting for their turn to bathe the baby Buddha statue sat patiently.
There was also an exhibit of artwork featuring the temple or the artist’s interpretation of the temple on display. The entire trip was more than worth it. The temple is amazing. Though as amazing as it is I still find myself wondering how on earth those elderly people manage to get up to the top without having a coronary. Please don’t tell me it’s the kimchi.
They really are too too cute!
I love the little mini Buddha statues… I just got home from Gyeongju yesterday and I saw so many of them at all the different temples. sooo cute ^^
