The folks at the New Yorker have a long standing tradition of political satire. From the cover of Bush and his cabinet conducting a meeting in shoulder deep water post Katrina to the cover of Bush playing house maid, dusting off a lounging Dick Cheney the staff at the magazine has long been known to hold up a mirror to those in the political landscape.
This week they took another step in that direction with the picture above serving as their new cover. Obama decked out as a muslim, complete with head wrap, fist bumping his black militant rifle toting wife all before a picture of Bin laden and an American flag burning in the fire place.
Both the right and the left are calling foul. The Obama campaign has called the cover tateless and even McCain has said that he believes the Obama campaign has cause to be upset. So, what do you think? Is this cover much ado about nothing? The editor of the New Yorker says that the cover reveals all the slander about the Obama’s being unamerican muslims waiting to seize the White House as ridiculous. On the other hand some are saying this feeds right into all the rumors by giving the falsehoods a visual.
What do you think?
Jim! Not to mention that if Obama’s wife had been a former drug addict who stole her drugs he would never have even made it into the Senate let alone snagged the Dem’s nomination.>>I think its highly hypocritcal that folks are whining over Obama’s news coverage when McCain is not being at all covered for his constant gaffes and missteps. He fumbles about like a fool and no one in the media calls him on it except Rachel Meadows and Keith O over at MSNBC. >>Its astounding. I can’t believe he can get away with calling his wife the C word and no one makes a peep about it.>>I hope his karmic comeuppence is on its way.
Hey Brian, This has all blown over now but I think that as we get closer to the election we will revisit this. The haters are in a tizzy over Obama and they are going to dump a whole lot of other stuff on there with him because the idea of a Black man in the White House is quite unsettling to them. The media here seems to have peaked in it's love for Obama and the stories are starting to tilt towards McCain but they practically have to make up good stuff to say because the only thing they can say about McCain that his people can bear to hear is that he's white, otherwise he's just an old man from the old days with skin cancer who sometimes says stupid stuff, and his wife dresses so badly. You'd think with her money she'd have a Gay stylist and that she'd invest in some nice hair extensions.
Hi, Joy, I feel almost the same way. I just wish that the New Yorker, if they wanted to be satrical about the things people say about Obamas, would have focused on the people saying those things instead of putting an image to the words. I'm sure that cover is hanging up in the homes of haters everywhere and reconfirming the rumors to some voters.
Hi,> I have to say that before I left America I was a subscriber to the New Yorker. And one of the main tokens of being a subscriber is you know you will receive a witty and nice designed cover. >>In my opinion this cover does go a tad too far. It reminds of satirical images of ‘Black face’ which were around a long time ago. Usually the way people get away with this is by saying that they were being creative.>>As an artist I know that what you present to people and what their reactions are will be different from your intentions. But I think the intentions are clearly stated in this image.>>Since I am a supporter for Obama it worries me to see an image such as this.>>I think it shows that people should focus on the main point of this election, which is stop having ppl like Bush in office. >>An image like this gives ppl second thoughts on voting for Obama and that is troublesome because I feel it is important to encourage ppl to believe in Obama and not his image.>>I hope that this doesn’t hinder his campaign.
