KMK: City Underground

Korea Travel

Hey there, intrepid travelers and subway enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the delightful labyrinth that is the Seoul subway system. Imagine a sprawling network of 8 (update: 9!) subway lines that crisscross the city, carrying folks to their destinations like an underground bullet train. It’s like your very own real-life maze, complete with surprises around every corner.

Marker Magic: One of the perks of navigating the Seoul subway is the plethora of markers on the platform. These little gems are like your secret rendezvous points with friends. You can call them up and say, “Meet me at marker whatever,” and voilà – you’ve just turned subway commuting into a rendezvous adventure. Who needs GPS when you’ve got markers and a cell phone? The Thrill of the Crush: Now, let’s talk about the people – loads and loads of them! The subway cars can sometimes resemble sardine cans during rush hour. You might find yourself so jam-packed that you’ll wonder if you’ve accidentally signed up for an impromptu group hug session. “Held up” isn’t just a figure of speech; it’s a reality when you’re sandwiched between fellow commuters.

But fret not, my friends! These crush times are typically confined to rush hours, when everyone’s playing a game of “Let’s See How Many People We Can Fit in This Tin Can.” The rest of the time, you can enjoy a fairly comfortable ride with room to spare. Personal space, here we come!

Subway Stations: More Than Meets the Eye: Prepare to be amazed because your local subway station might just be hiding some surprises. Take, for example, my station, Omokgyo. Inside, it’s a treasure trove of stores, vendors, and tunnels that lead you to the Hyundai Department store. It’s like a shopping paradise hidden beneath the bustling streets of Seoul. Who needs a mall when your subway station doubles as a retail wonderland?

Dance Break Delight: And speaking of hidden treasures, the subway isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s also a stage for spontaneous performances. Just the other day, I stumbled upon a group of kids busting out some impressive breakdancing moves right there on the platform. Spins, twists, and dizzying backbreaking feats – it was like a live dance performance, and the audience was all of us lucky commuters. Who needs Broadway when you’ve got the Seoul subway?

So, my fellow subway adventurers, remember this: the Seoul subway is more than just a means of getting from Point A to Point B. It’s a destination in itself, a place where markers lead to epic meetups, hidden treasures await, and impromptu dance shows can brighten your day. So, next time you’re underground, embrace the journey – you never know what delightful surprises might be waiting for you! 🚇🎉

  1. I think that is cool as anything I ever heard. It’s almost like I can hear excitment in the words you type.

  2. One time I saw an older gentleman with a cd player and a bag full of old motown oldies selling them to whoever he could. He even started singing some of the tunes. He was a riot! Thanks for the linkage, Ipsofacto.

  3. Have you been in on the subway when you get random Koreans selling really useless stuff which amazingly, people buy? Incredible.I’ve added a link to you on my blog.
