With the coming of the new year comes the tradition of making Tteok Mandu-guk! It’s a dish made of rice cakes, beef, and dumplings as well as a host of vegetables. It’s served as a soup of sorts. On New Year’s day it is a must eat dish. It’s a bringer of good luck and a signifier of turning one year older.

Some time ago Korea decided to follow the Chinese or Lunar new year, but a lot of folks still prepare the dish on January first.

This year my friend Kalli whipped up some for us and it was way better than I expected. I think a year is far too long to wait for more Tteok Mandu-guk!

You don’t even have to wait another year. This upcoming Saturday is the Second Saturday of the month and that means the folks of 2S2 will be out and about doing their thing. This time the plan is to meet up with Dan’s Seoul Eats Meet up at 12pm Exit 1 of Anguk station to get some delicious Mandu-guk at Kong Mandu Restaurant. Then those who are inclined to do so may mosey over to the Twosome place in Insadong for the 2S2 meet up. Sounds like a plan right?
