Classroom Management: Rewards

When it comes to encouraging and rewarding students for good behavior or a job well done, nothing beats a good old fashioned stamp.

Now you would think that in this day and age of hi tech gadgets and toys that a mere stamp would be mocked. Not so! The kids will risk life and limb for one of those little colored ink blots. It’s quick and easy. Though stamps for stamps sake is not all there is to it. If they manage to garner 15 stamps they are rewarded with a no homework coupon to use in case they forget or don’t finish their homework one day.

You could use any reward you want, but the no homework coupon means no money spent by you. Just spring for the stamp and ink or have your school buy it. Voila! You’re ready to start whipping that class into tip top shape or get devoured alive. Let me know which one happens!

I do something like this in my classes but with stickers. Each kid in the beginning of the year gets a manilla folder with their name written on it in marker. They get 1 sticker for each homework assignment turned in, 2 stickers if they turn it in early, and an extra sticker if everyone in the class turns in that particular homework assignment by the end of the week (stickers are awarded on Friday). Once they get 100 stickers they can invite 5 friends and themselves to eat lunch in my room. I have been waved down in the hallway by kids as soon as they get off the bus to try and give me their homework AND they encourage each other to turn their homework in. Stickers are amazing!

I forgot to say they put their stickers on the manilla folders…so I don’t find them stuck on everything else and I can keep track of how many they receive.
