I read in the Korea Times that the stage production of Cats here in Korea will be getting a new make over. Come this fall in September the Cats be Koreanized. The lyrics in the musical are based on TS Eliot’s poems and they will be given a thorough Korean translation.
I think the move will definitely make it more accessible to the Korean audience. I wonder if they will go so far as revamp the musical score to include traditional Korean instruments? The cast is also undergoing a change with Korean actors and actresses taking over the roles.
You still have time to see the London version if you want. The London team’s “Cats” will be at the Charlotte Theater in southern Seoul from May 30 to Aug. 31. The Korean rendition will follow the show from mid-September to the end of January at the same venue.
