KMK: Cambodia – Preah Khan

International Travel

Bet you thought my chronicle of Cambodia was over? Wrong! There is still much more to come and lets kick things off with Preah Khan. This temple situated near Angkor Thom. The name in modern times translates as “holy sword”.

Nature has run rampant over this temple and careful efforts of the World Monuments Fund has pushed back the more aggressive plant life to restore the site. The huge trees however were left to stand.

The temple is built on the site of of Jayavarman the VII’s victory over the Chams in the year 1181. Shrines on the site were dedicated to over four hundred different deities.

Sam and I give our best temple statue pose.

You can see why the restoration crew decided to leave the trees alone. They truly are magnicificent in their own right.

The only two storied area of the site. Everything else was a long sprawling space.

If you think the way nature has integrated with the temple here is impressive wait until you see the trees of Ta Prohm.

A couple children were sketching statues in the sand for change.
