KMK: Big Bad Momma

Arts Music

So, tonight clicking away on the mouse, surfing Dave’s Esl Cafe website for promising Korean teaching positions I paused mid click when my friend turned up the sound on the TV and I heard the words known around the world “…and I am telling you, I’m not going….” being sung not just well or passable, but with stank on it (which is a good thing).

I jumped up from my desk, raced into the living room, and plopped down next to my friend to be stunned by a performance that I only believed a handful of people could pull off. Well, tonight I added one more name to that list because Lakisha Jones from American Idol blew me away. Ms. Holiday would have been proud. Then again the way she’s been acting out lately she probably would have jumped on stage, snatched the microphone from poor Lakisha and sung the song herself.

Lakisha is a big girl, which I like, because sometimes only a big girl can do a song justice: Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott, and Angie Stone lay it out like no others alive. Lakisha lived the song. In fact, at one point, she clawed desperately at her dress so close to between her legs that I thought Lakisha was about to love herself on stage if no one else was going to heed her soulful pleas. Thankfully, she didn’t and made it through the song, in key mind you, in such a show stopping fashion that I rewound the Tivo so I could hear how her competition fared.

Contestant Leslie Hunt immediately stood out for all the wrong reasons and helped reinforce the point I made above about big girls and certain songs. Leslie, misguided thing, took on Aretha’s Natural Woman. Now, I know of few people who have the vocal chops to sing that song and Leslie just couldn’t do it. She tried and I applauded because it takes guts to take on the Queen of Soul. But while Leslie scored her A for effort Melinda, Sabrina, Stephanie and Jordan all knocked the ball out of the park. Those gals owned the stage and gave everything they had. It was great to watch.

The rest of the ladies ran the gamut from breathy vixens to perky princesses and they all bombed. This one gal, Antonella, did show a whole lot of promise and you could tell she sang so god awful because she was so nervous. She’ll do better next time.

Well, gotta go Dave’s Esl Cafe is waiting.

later.
